I have a few shapes/formations I always use when I do compositions, you can see the image below;

The green line is usually where I place the subject/character, the blue and red lines are the flow, I usually put clothes/hair or other elements for this. I also tend to mix together the composition formations to have a more interesting look. The key is ‘balance’ but it doesn’t mean you have to draw things symmetrically, asymmetrical shape can be interesting too.
